I developed Teasing Apart, Piecing Together (TAPT) during my EngD at the University of Southampton. TAPT is a method for analysing and redesigning experiences by deconstructing and reconstructing them. In addition to analysis and design, it has also been used for evaluation of software projects and workshop events.

I gave a half-day tutorial on TAPT at DESIRE'11, and more information on the method can be found on the tutorial webpage. You can also download PDF copies of TAPT instructions and blank TAPT forms.

Fun things that haven't (yet) been done with TAPT:

  • Using TAPT to analyse negative experiences
  • Explore how the proportion of surface, external and internal components alter when examining different types of experience. (Does a rollercoaster ride present more external elements than drinking a cup of tea?)
  • What happens when a software engineer conducts the Teasing Apart, and a designer the Piecing Together?
